Definitions
A seasonal contract is a fixed-term employment contract entered into for work of a seasonal nature.
Seasonal work is commonly defined as work normally required to be repeated each year on a more or less fixed date depending on the rhythm of the seasons or collective ways of life and which are carried out on the behalf of an undertaking whose business is subject to the same variations.
This definition relates in particular to agriculture and tourism.
In agriculture and viticulture, the season is defined by reference to the products processed.
Examples
- Crop gathering and grape picking.
In the case of tourist activities, seasonal work may be performed by undertakings whose activity is linked to the seasons and those whose activity merely increases seasonally.

By comparison with a “traditional” fixed-term employment contract, a seasonal contract is subject to specific legal rules regarding the duration of the contract, its renewal from one season to the next and successive contracts.
