Various legislations from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day have given the ITM competences as regards mines, pits and quarries in relation to the safety of people.
The ITM is thus responsible for specific safety issues in relation to existing operated or condemned mines, with the aim of ensuring the safety of all those involved.
Underground galleries and mines open to the public for tourist or cultural purposes are:
- the National Mining Museum in Rumelange
- the underground galleries in Rodange/Lasauvage Mine
- the "Koffergrouf" in Stolzembourg
- the "musée des Ardoisières" in Haut-Martelange
- the Grôven Mine tourist site in Differdange
- the Petrusse Casemates in Luxembourg City (FR - DE)
The following two galleries are still being operated:
- (water pumping – ArcelorMittal)
- Walferdange (gypsum – Underground Laboratory for Geodynamics)
There are about 150 accesses to mining galleries that are not open to the public and out of service.
