Training programs and training institutes

Asbestos removal work

Training is required for all activities in which employees are exposed to or could be exposed to asbestos dust or materials containing asbestos.

This training is offered by several training companies and must be followed prior to commencing any work involving exposure to asbestos.

For the removal of asbestos cement in the open air, a company official must follow an 8 hour training course and must train the company's employees.

For any other asbestos-removal work, a training course of 22 hours minimum is required. This course must be taken by the company official and by all of the employees that will work on the asbestos-removal site.

Upon successful completion of a knowledge assessment conducted in the presence of an ITM representative, a certificate of competence is issued.

The training courses required are provided by training institutes recognised by the ITM and compliant with the provisions of Article L. 542-2 of the Labour Code:

  • LC Académie
  • Vinçotte
  • Institut de Formation Sectoriel du Bâtiment (IFSB)

Asbestos Surveyor

Before undertaking demolition, maintenance or renovation work in a building constructed before 3 April 2001, the employer must ensure that the possible presence of asbestos-containing materials has been assessed.

Where the necessary information cannot be obtained from the owner, other employers or any other relevant source, a specific asbestos survey must be carried out before work begins.

To ensure the quality of these surveys, they must be carried out exclusively by asbestos surveyors holding a certificate of competence. Obtaining this certificate requires completion of a specific 12-hour training course and the successful completion of a knowledge assessment conducted in the presence of an ITM representative.

Persons holding an asbestos surveyor qualification obtained in another Member State of the European Union may submit an application for equivalence to the ITM by post or by email.

The required training is provided by the following training institute recognised by the ITM and compliant with the provisions of Article L. 542-2 of the Labour Code:

  • Ingélialux
