D2e1 - What is to be understood by an apprenticeship?

Definitions
Apprenticeship is defined as the acquisition of new skills.

The aim of an apprenticeship is to enable an employer recognised as skilled to teach the practice of a profession to an apprentice.

The apprentice may be:

  • either a teenager:  in that case, the term used is “initial apprenticeship”;
  • or an adult: then the term used is “adult apprenticeship”.

An apprenticeship makes it possible to reconcile:

  • theoretical and general training obtained in a vocational school;
  • with practical training within a commercial, industrial, agricultural or craft undertaking, under the direction of a supervisor.
